F. G. Delamotte

1814–1862. Engraver, alphabet compiler. Born in England.

Freeman Gage Delamotte collected and engraved alphabets for draughtsmen, masons, painters and lithographers. His books were reprinted through the second half of the nineteenth century.

The plates show full A to Z sets in one alphabet. That is rare on posters, and it is why the books matter here as sources, not as decoration samples.

History

Delamotte’s alphabet books were published for craftsmen who needed complete letter sets. This plate reprints a Gothic alphabet after a British Museum model dated 1480.

Unlike a poster, the plate gives almost the whole alphabet at once. J, V and W are missing, as in many medieval sets, and have to be finished to match the plate.

The plate scan comes from a 1906 edition of The Signist’s Book of Modern Alphabets, published with no known restrictions.
